[SOLVED] Does Speckie spell checker work with Outlook.com?

Hello All

Trying to assist an elderly gentleman who uses outlook.com for email.

I have Googled about the Microsoft help forums and it seems that threads started arising around November 2015 relating to spell check no longer working in Outlook.com on older OS's and browsers.

I understand that modern browsers support built-in spell check functionality however I am dealing with Vista and if I understand correctly I can not update Vista to IE10 or 11

Therefore I am after some general information from anyone who may use Speckie spell checker or someone who may be able to confirm for me that it would work in Outlook.com under the following circumstances:

• Windows Vista Home Premium
• Internet Explorer 9
• Browser login via IE9 for outlook.com

Speckie apparently works for spell checking forms under IE9 but I guess I am wondering if outlook.com is considered a form as I don't really understand the underlying code.

Please accept the regular standard apology if I have posted to the wrong place (I know I am talking Vista at a 7 forum but I already have an account here and am quite sure someone here has the know how to assist).

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I've never used the browser add-on you're inquiring about so I can't say

I usually used Google toolbar for it's spell checker...... it's actually quite good

Using ie9 well outlook.com should show the manual spell checker button if the browser does not have the ability.

I would consider using Pale moon instead it is pretty good and is pretty close to internet explorer in looks and performs better and comes with spell checker.

Thanks for the reply ThrashZone and apologies for not checking back in here sooner.

So I tried Speckie, or at least I tried to install it anyway with no success - IE was complaining about not having correct permissions set to install the add-on with mentions also in the prevailing error about looking at Group Policy. Not sure if the latter there is even possible considering I was dealing with Home Premium and not Pro.

Tried temporarily disabling Smart Screen Filter etc from the Safety section of IE9 browser options and also temporarily turning Windows Firewall off for the installation plus everything else I could possibly think of but all to no avail - couldn't install.

I have reset my old friends computer to factory on several occasions and then installed all updates and software back on there for him but he has a definite bad habit of not maintaining the computer in any way so it might be time to start from out of the box state again I feel, if for nothing else but the simple fact that all sorts of critical files seem to miraculously get deleted from his machine but he maintains it is never him that does these things even though he is the only user

I'll check out Google Toolbar and Pale moon but in the interim I have simply told him to open a new tab in his browser and use the Ajax capability of Google search itself as a spell checker. For example spell belief as beleif and your gonna see the correct spelling in the list of results there somewhere.

He is also willing to go very old school by using a dictionary and after all he is 92 years old so he knows how that one works.
