Solved Does Win7 format the drive on installation?
I'm configuring a data recovery package (Kroll Ontrack) to do a recovery on a drive that had data on it but when Win 7 was installed all the data was lost. The options I have are to seek out deleted files or those where a format was done. The latter will take up to 16 hours and return an ungodly amount of files to sift through

Yes it does format the drive on installation. See if it made a Windows.Old file. This is where it puts all of the info that was written over with the new install.

It might delete partitions but it sure as heck won't secure-erase any of it. Of course, if you changed the partition style from MBR to GPT...

Partition style was not changed .
There are directories titled: Windows.old; Windows.old.000 & .001 & .002
The files I seek are not all there. - - At least if they are I haven't discovered them just yet.
Is it possible that Windows doesn't prefer to save all of them?

Arc,
You got the wrong program. What you meant to get for him is
Recuva , which is available
here, here, and even
on their site .
It looks like you corrected the link, but the
visible text says otherwise.

Perhaps you dont know who I am ....so you are pointing it out to me.
I never corrected the link, I just typed Speccy and wrapped the Recuva link.
If you click on the Speccy text, the link goes to Recuva only.
Thanks for the the pointing out, I will rectify the the word now.
And, who am I? I am the resident typo guru.
