Hi,

Just got my Acer upgrade DVD and Windows 7 Upgrade Media disc. It says to first put in the Acer upgrade DVD and follow the 3 steps. But it never goes past the first step! i.e. I click on start to prepare for the installation and then it does something for a few minutes, and then nothing else happens. Am wondering if its such a pain to even upgrade, how bad actually using win7 must be.

Any suggestions? Acer support is useless - they have no clue whats going on.

Sorry to hear that. MS requires manufacturers to give decent tech support for their OS. Sometimes I call back 2-3 times to get the help or answers I need.

Earlier we suggested an Acer user boot from the Upgrade disk and do a clean install of just the Win7 upgrade. It worked.

He didn't even need to use the second disk which holds the drivers, apps and bloatware. Win7 installer has almost all drivers, and newer ones come in quickly on Windows Updates. Plus you can get drivers from the Acer product support downloads webpage for your model.

Why don't you try that as you could end up getting the cleanest possible install, without the bloatware that corrupts a great OS like Win7.

If you can wait, when I get home this weekend I am going to do my roommate's Win7 Acer upgrade and will figure out how to smoothly clean install it without the bloat.

We are here to help you every step of the way.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I can wait till the weekend. But just a quick question - can I just insert the Windows 7 Upgrade Media disc and not bother with the Acer DVD? I would prefer to upgrade the OS instead of a clean install as it would be a pain for me to back-up files, etc as I do not have any external storage to back up on.....

There is a good tutorial that will explain the procedure.

Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Just start Vista and insert the installation DVD. The tutorial will explain every step.
The Upgrade may take a few hours to process all of your programs so be patient.

Win7 will give you most or all of the drivers you will need. If you need any other drivers you can get them from the Acer website. The site will have any recovery partition or video camera programs you might need.
You shouldn't need to use the Acer DVD.

As DocBrown mentioned Windows Easy Transfer is a easy way to get your user settings and personal files if you decide to do a Clean install. You will still have to install all your programs.

Let us know if you have any questions.
