The U.S. Department of Justice is defending computer hacking laws that make it a crime to use a fake name on Facebook or lie about your weight in an online dating profile at a site like Match.com.

In a statement obtained by CNET that's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, the Justice Department argues that it must be able to prosecute violations of Web sites' often-ignored, always-unintelligible "terms of service" policies.

It seems to me, that anyone that uses services such as those, do not expect all details about a person to be exactly true. Therefore, it would appear that the necessity for accuracy is more for the benefit of the government than for people using the services. It is simply an underhanded means of gathering data on people.

According to your definition of fraud, every person on Earth is guilty of fraud, for legal purposes, fraud has specific boundaries. Therefore, since lying is not necessarily fraud. If it were otherwise, it would justify the government sticking their nose anywhere they please, for any purpose, which is the big brother concept written about in Orson Welle's "1984". Is that really what you are purposing?

Lying about your weight to obtain something is fraud. So therefore you are breaking the law.

Perhaps for obtaining medication from a pharmacist, not for "obtaining" a relationship, as a relationship has no monetary value as goods or a service.

It seems like the reporter has put a comedy skew on the angle by referring to match.com (which probably isn't specifically named in the statemet). It's specifically for enforcing website terms of service and should actually deter fraudsters or sexual predators for signing up to many services (dating or not) with false credentials.

I don't feel it wise to make light of this situation, because I believe that it is an omen of things just over the horizon. I think that what is needed is an association of computer users, that would act as a lobby to represent the interests of all who use the internet and computers in general...somewhat akin to the NRA or AARP. While it would be a national organization, it should branch out to become global, because the problems that it would need to deal with are global.

I'm too old to do much about it, except to plant a seed, which hopefully would take root and grow rapidly, because we need it now, not just in some far away future. Potentially, it could become a force to be dealt with.

I say that someone in this sue first society we live in took a case the court which involved this matter. Now the DOJ has to prepare and protect the common laws. If it was not for our "society" doing the crazy things we do this all would go away.
