It seems we may be at cross-purposes. The first comment here on this topic said that Brave is a Chromium-based programme, not Chrome-based, although there is considerable common code. Seems to me repeating this doesn't have a lot of point.
Concerning addons (extensions), the point is not installing them, it is finding the ones you want for installation. The Chrome webpage offering what Google would like you to use is limited by Google's notion of competition. Wanting to use Startpage as a search engine is a good example. Github provides some of these addons specifically for the Brave browser, addons that the Chrome webpage specifically does not provide.
And yes, the uncontrollable-by-user updates for Brave has a very exact reason. The Brave user forum has pages of pointed discussion on this, with the developers insisting that it is a cornerstone of the browser programme and they will not change it. So my reaction has been to monitor the traffic with a very comprehensive firewall, looking for deal breakers. None so far, but that's the value of monitoring: if, for example, Startpage or some other useful attribute becomes persona non grata, one may suspect the browser code has been onsold. Decision time ...
For me, this simple topic is now exhausted. Those looking for a browser that works fully in Win 7 may have benefitted from this discussion.
