DOS 6.22 diskettes

I still have my DOS 6.22 diskettes put away. I know I’ll never use them—actually I couldn't’t if I wanted to since my computers don’t have the floppy disk drive. But I keep them—don’t know why but I hate to throw them away. I remember when I installed them in the office computer and though they were so cool. Are there any of you like me and still hanging on to them?

Yep...still have mine. I also have a few floppy drives laying around in storage. My mobo still has a floppy header, if I have an inkling to I could go ahead and install one.

Note: they do make a usb floppy drive.

Yeah, I keep all my old PC progs/OS disks. Just to look at them once in a while & think back to those days. A while back I grabbed an old machine & just for the fun of it, I installed Win 95 & played with that for a while....

Hell, I still have some 5.25 floppy disks in my desk....

That's right--I never thought of that. If I wanted to, I could get USB drive and Install DOS on a virtual machine couldn't I? I can't see any reason for doing it, but I think it would work.

I remember using the 5.25. Using one now would be a little like driving a model-T Ford.

I still have some 3.5" disks but not here. I fried my last floppy drive and I haven't bothered to replace it. Why spend the money? I've never had anything "bigger" though.

Dos 6.2

I still have copies. They are not on floppies. I copied them to a rom disk. I have often thought I could put them on a USB stick but have never tried it.

For years I stored all my typesetting for my "Very " smallprinting business on floppies and even after 8 years of retirement I still get some of my old customers asking me to run off 50 letterheads which I am happy to do on my modern printer. It does mean keeping Windows 98 on an old machine as that was the last OS that took my original desk top publishing program now defunct! But surpisingly the printer driver works in Win 98!

I have dos 6.22 and windows 3.11 installed on a virtual disk under Virtual PC.
Works and I can just copy the vhd to another machine and it works the way Gates and God intended.

It's doubtful that they would work. I had Office 97 and it worked fairly well on Vista on a 32 bit machine.

Thanks for the info Frank. I have it installed on a old evo W 6000 with XP-PRO 32. I hate that computer because you have to keep it plugged in or it looses it's bios time. I have tried several batteries with no luck.

Indeed it does but all the old files are saved as .DTP files and will only open with a program called Pressworks. Many of them are so old they go back to Windows 3.0 which was the version before Windows recognised True Type fonts so the fonts used in the files are embedded in the program. We are pretty old fashioned here in the south west of Cornwall in the UK. There are people here who are still convinced that this internet thingy will never catch on!!!!!! It's just a flash in the pan!

I have to wonder if some of these older programs might actually be immune to certain newer viruses, being they're as old as they are. I might have to plug in the old PC running Win 95 to the net & see what happens when you go to some known virus sites.....

My old Timeworks/Pressworks program is on 4 floppies so there is probably not much in them that would be targetted by a modern virus. Interested to hear the results of your test though.

I have boxes of both 5.25 & 3.5" diskettes including most DOS Versions since DOS 1.1. You can use a program like WinImage to make images of the old diskettes and the images can be read by VMs just like an ISO.

I have an old machine that has 5.25 & 3.5" floppy drives in it that allows me to copy stuff from one format to the other.

I have a VM on my machine with DOS 6.22 which is fun to play with but for most times when DOS is needed or wanted, DosBox works well.

As far as old software, I have original disks of Lotus 1-2-3 and also have a copy of VisiCalc somewhere.
