Double-click and enter do not open pdf, rtf file associations

The .pdf and .rtf associations are set correctly to Adobe Reader and Wordpad but double-click or enter only responds by opening Windows Explorer. The right-click context menu lists "Open with Adobe Reader X" correctly and certainly works but is not how I'm used to working for the last however many years .pdf has been around.

I had hoped that if I could somehow get Adobe Reader into the Default Programs list and that that would help. However, Wordpad IS listed in my Default Programs and is set for .rtf and .docx but double-clicking .rtf does not respond by opening WordPad, only Windows Explorer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT has Persistent Handler and ShellEx settings for .pdf but I don't know for sure if these are the relevant keys.

I'm also amazed (well, not really...) that MS apparently has no system for people to report bugs, only a system to take your money to (hopefully?) solve your problem...

Yes, Rich, I have been perusing that and thinking about it for a couple of weeks. Don't want to do anything rash Seems like it would be the most major change to any registry I've managed since registries began... I'll think on it some more...

I would feel more confident about trying it if there were at least a few comments from users who found it useful. The comments posted are mostly not relevant to the actual reg replacement. (Also, the scheme is pretty old to seem comfortable to be compatible with sp1...lots of things have changed in the inner details...)

Ok, now that I downloaded the file, I see that I can just use the one for pdf, etc. Less to think about...but still thinking...

System become more unstable, restore point cured all

Eventually I started to have additional system problems, which may or may not be tied to my most recent (auto) update to Firefox 10.0.1: I allowed it to shut down/reboot my system after it installed and I know it shut down before at least one program was finished and that messed that up totally.

Thankfully a restore to a windows update of a few days ago not only cured that program that Firefox may have directly or indirectly messed up, but my pdfs now miraculously open on dbl-click.
