Down go tablet shipments -- for the first time ever

The tablet market has, since 2010, been soaring. But new data shows that things aren't so rosy any longer.

Total worldwide shipments of tablets and so-called 2-in-1 devices (hybrids of laptops and tablets) during the fourth quarter of 2014 hit 76.1 million units, declining by 3.2 percent compared to the 78.6 million tablets that headed to store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2013, IDC reported Monday. This was the first time that tablet shipments have declined since a wave of devices, including Apple's iPad, ignited the market in 2010, IDC said.

This doesn't surprise me at all, a market of over saturation like all markets with potential profits have caused so much choice that nobody wants to choose anymore, that and the fact that nobody wants a tablet because we have Phablets.

People are sick of paying through the nose for a sub par PC and getting nothing but mobile advertisements and companies/developers ripping them off at "app stores" with "freemium" apps, and unfortunately this business model is also merging over to a desktop environment....

I use my tablet every day. It's just a cheapo android but it serves as an alarm clock, a radio a TV, an ebook and audiobook reader and and comms device when I go to bed and in the morning. The only use it has during the day is as a remote for Chromecast. Worth every penny of the £130 I paid for it last year.

I became interested in a particular tablet until I saw the temperature profile in a professional review. These things have serious heat issues even when in idle compared to the traditional laptop...

Nah, I never observed that on my Android Nexus 7 and my Windows 8.1 Asus T100 Transformer.

Mine is reported to run quite hot which they blame on the 1080p screen. It only feels warm to the touch though.
