I bought a Kindle ebook, downloaded Amazon Kindle ebook reader for the PC, logged into my account, right clicked on the book thumbnail, chose to download the book, where is the book ? At this point I have a strong impression Amazon doesn't want you to ever have an offline version of the book you downloaded, but that is not for them to decide, that is for me to decide.

Your impression isn't correct. The books are downloaded to "C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Kindle Content" by default. The location can be changed in the Kindle reader's Options.
