Download folder freezes shortly after opening it

Hello all,

I recently ran into this issue and it's really bothersome. Whenever I try to open the downloads folder on my computer I can only scroll through it for a couple of seconds before my computer completely freezes (can't even press Ctrl+Alt+Del).

What I have noticed:

- I can still access files in the folder by using Chrome's downloads page (chrome://downloads/).
- After booting in safe mode and browsing the downloads folder there was no freezing and everything seemed to work fine.
- While opening the folder does freeze my computer, there is a split second before it freezes where I can browse the folder. Everything seems to be there. Then the file path box at the top of the explorer shows a green loading bar which only makes it about a 1/4 of the way before freezing. Side note: why does it appear to be loading something when everything appears to be in the folder? Is it checking for new files?
- I tried to do a Kaspersky virus scan on just the downloads folder and that froze the computer too.
- My computer also freezes whenever I "lock" it. Not sure if it's related but its the only other occurrence of my computer completely freezing.

I'll point out that I have 2 SSDs, one of which has my windows install and the downloads folder and I have a HDD that I usually leave unplugged.

If anyone could offer some assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
TNPNah

Hi bluestar,

Sorry for the confusion. Downloading isn't the problem, the downloads folder (C:\Users\TNPNah\Downloads) is. Whenever I try to open the folder in windows explorer my computer freezes.

I should note that this only happens with the Downloads folder. I can browse all other folders through windows explorer without any issue.
