OK. I put this here as Brink helped me with an icon problem.

I managed to resolve the issue with Brink's awesome help, and got all icons in question in the right spot.

This was the tutorial I used:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

I managed to resolve the issue by using option 2, the elevated command prompt method.

But in the trials, I did attempt the first method of downloading this:

Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat

and I could not open the .bat file. This is what I got:
Capture1.PNG

Notice that the file Windows is claiming it can't open is named :
Rebuild_Icon_Cache.DOWNLOAD

Because Brink wants to keep only one topic under the given tutorial, he mentioned that I should post somewhere else, and then we could tackle it.

I was unsure of WHERE to put it, not really knowing how to classify this problem, so if someone could move me to the proper place, by all means, I would appreciate that.

This was a very perplexing problem, especially when it came to common sense....hard to explain, as you would have to read the posts under the tutorial, and read them WELL to understand why I was so confused.

REGARDLESS. I was wondering if someone could help me figure this issue out, as to why the downloads are being labelled wrong.

I appreciate any and all help, and thanks ahead of time.

Rename the file by changing the file extension from .download to .bat.

Ya just gotta love AV software...
What antivirus program are you using... It's likely either it or your browser renamed the file to prevent you from running it accidentally.

I just downloaded the file in IE and got the .bat version.

Hi, devildog93.

Congratulations on successfully rebuilding the icon cache!

I went to the linked tutorial and clicked on the Download of the .bat file and the file name was correct. Had you attempted renaming the file from ".download" to .bat?

Edit Note:

LOL -- while I was looking at the tutorial, I see there's already several similar replies.

And you can't change the extension to .bat?

Well I had tried that last night, and the file wouldn't work. it would warn me that it might become unusable, and it was.

I just tried downloading a new .bat again, and it still came in as .DOWNLOAD, but I changed it to .BAT, and I saw the icon change to the proper one, I clicked on it and it rebuilt the icon cache. So, it seems to work by doing that now. Maybe the reboot last night set me straight now.

Any reason why they would be coming in labelled wrong. I have downloaded .BAT files from the tutorials before and they came in labelled properly

Stop using real-time shields. It interferes with how your computer works. If you want protection use occasional scans and something like Sandboxie. av causes probably more problems than it prevents(I don't know how to count what it prevents but you can count what it causes!)

Wow, OK. You guys are too fast LOL

I am using Spyware Doctor w/ AV I have never had this problem or any other in fact, with it in almost 2 years, BUT anything is possible.

I DO HOWEVER, thinking about it, remember a day about 2 weeks ago, I ran the registry part of CCleaner, and I had two or 3 "problems" pop up

I can't remember the names, BUT they were definitely windows system32 folder related, and something to to with file extensions.

I see that, I usually put them on the ignore list of CCleaner.

I accidentally ran the cleaner and deleted those "problems"

Maybe one had to do with .BAT?

I am gonna try some other random extension downloads and see what I get for end results.

Sorry had to go for supper there.

Yeah, I think I'll just do that now.

Hopeufully .BAT is the only extension I have to do this with.

We'll see over the next few days or so.

I could do a system restore, but I have done way too much to my system in the last 24 hours, to justify going back a week for such a trivial problem.

THANKS FOR HELP EVERYONE, but unless this becomes a more pervasive problem, I think I will ignore it, and just use the re-name workaround, like suggested.

AND DO SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS MORE OFTEN!

I find CCleaner generally safe. However I don't run the registry clean too often. Don't want to temp fate. Usually it's because I uninstalled a program that doesn't know how to uninstall gracefully. Then I use CCleaner to get rid of the Registry traces.

I also have daily automatic registry backup using ERUNT. I set up ERUNT Autobackup to make a rotating Registry backup of the last 7 days. The oldest automatically gets deleted. Only uses about 800 MB for the whole 7 days.

I normally don't do any registry cleaning unless, like you said, I have uninstalled a program, and I want to get rid of the slop.

I unfortunately must have forgot to leave them out of the entries to be deleted, and I STUPIDLY did not back up before doing it.

SO. I think I have created a FILE ASSOCIATION problem for myself.

I think Windows is basically coming back and saying , "I don't know who that is so I don't want to associate with them"

It's like I gave the system a little alzheimers.

Anyways, I have been researching fixing file associations in Windows, and have found a few potential answers, but I keep running into other problems.

I found a file called batfile.reg that should repair Windows association with bat files, but it says "one or more entries is open in another process"

So I am kinda stumped still.

EDIT:

Also found a file online called FileAssociationFixer.zip I opened extracted .exe file and the process seemed like it had potential, actually pretty cool.
BUT, it did not include BAT as an option for repair.

SO CLOSE BUT YET SO FAR!
