Download problems with IE

I have this download problem on two Pc's where the dot exe (.exe) is changed to underscore exe (_exe). I thougt it was a IE 11 issue and when I remove IE 11 and use IE 10 the error is gone for a while. Suddenly it appears again. I can read in various forums that more IE versions is affected. I have an idea that it is because I use Windows 7 64 bit because I have a Pc with Windows 7 32 bit and the error don't appear on this Pc. I know that I can install Firefox instead but this is not a real solution.Any experience out there?

See if this setting is checked in IE

Do not save encrypted pages to disk

If it is, uncheck it and try again.

Open IE> Tools (Gear upper right)> Internet options> Advanced> Scroll down to Security section> Uncheck Do not save encrypted pages to disk

Close IE and reopen it and try to download an .exe file.

If that doesn't work you can try this, scroll to the .exe extension and run it as outlined.

Do not save encrypted pages to disk is not checked and the problem is sporadic. If I reset the Explorer it might help for a while. Right now I don't have the problem. I will try Britton30s suggestion when it appears again.Peter.

If it happens again, and Britton30's suggestion does not help. Try creating a new user and see if it occurs there. You could have a corrupted user. Running a SFC scan might be suggested.

Hi,
What are in common with the two machines ?
Usually Security and utilities,
Please post what third party programs/ utilities have been used,
Registry cleaners of any kind....?
Hopefully sfc will shed some light,
Ultimately you may need to try to make a new administrator account and see how it works,
If it reacts the same with file extensions a repair or full re-install might be in order ?

You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,

Use Safe mode with networking and see how it downloads,
