Solved Downloaded all my music on SSD - Windows 7 runs hot! (explorer.exe)

Hi All,

As the title states:

I have a Lenovo X201 running Windows 7 64-bit. I have a 256 SSD and 8GB RAM. I recently reformatted and my laptop is running ice cold. When I download all of my music from my external on to my laptop, it runs super hot. Something is taking up bandwidth. I ran a scan on all of my music files, and there was nothing infected. There could be some corrupt files here and there, but I don't know if they have anything to do with the major overheat.

Before music was downloaded: 40-46 Celsius on idle.
After music was downloaded: 75-82 Celsius on idle.

Both dwm.exe and explorer.exe run harder when my music files (90 GB) are on the SSD.

What could be casusing this? I have tried reformatting again, uploading all of my music in portions, deleting/repairing corrupt mp3 files and the problem still persists. Could it be as an SSD fills up, it runs hotter? I wouldn't think so because it is just flash memory. I may be wrong though!

any suggestions/input would be greatly appreciated. I was wondering if any of you have had a similar issue!

Old SSD? In my opinion, I think the music files in SSD is not necessary or say wasteful

I wouldn't believe that temp is for your SSD.

Open resource monitor:
- switch to CPU tab, sort by CPU (check the Services too) - see what will come up
- switch to disk tab and see if anything is thrashing the SSD
- check the RAM tab too for any abnormal usage

I keep my music on my SSD because I use it to mix.

Those temps are for my CPU. I was wondering if having that much music on my SSD could be the reason this was happening.

I deleted all of the music off and now my CPU is running at 43 Celsius. It was really my explorer.exe running harder. Not sure why this could be happening.

First thing that comes to mind is disk indexing - the fact that you moved all the data, (music), to a new location the windows system would then try to index all this "new" data - it is set-up to perform this task when the system is idle and can stress the CPU quite a bit

Interesting. Is there a specific process that shows up when disk indexing is taking place? How long do you suppose this can take?

It runs under the control of Windows Search (WSearch) which is a Service. If indexing is running, I think it shows up as process "SearchIndexer.exe".

Indexing can take quite a long time depending on how many files were added and whether you have selected to index Content as well as File Name.

I can confirm with you that this service/process was not running when the 90GB of music was sitting on my SSD.

My CPU was just running super hot. Corrupt files? Maybe a virus? I have scanned those files multiple times.

I was simply following along with the possibility that it MIGHT be indexing and answering your question about it. It could also be your AV software or any number of programs or malware. You didn't provide any documentation of what was running. You simply said it was running hot. Perhaps the fan isn't working or you have the vents covered.

Is it still running hot? What temperature and what are you using to get it?

Run this DM Log Collector so we can get an idea of what is running as well as your configuration and logs.

Forgot to ask:
Are you using Windows Media Player? It also has a background process that gets song info off the web and updates tags if you didn't disable it.

Also, please explain what you mean by "reformat".

Ops. Forgot. Also, Volume Leveling (in the above image) can add time to mass additions. This is a process where the music is analyzed for a loudness index so songs play at similar levels.

I thought there was another place too but I don't recall. Perhaps it was Media Center or a Scheduled Task. I looked at my Task list and couldn't find anything but I set mine up years ago.

Hey guys. It was the indexing that was causing the CPU to run hot. I let the laptop sit for 4-5 hours, and I came back to it running ice cold again.
