hello, if i am, say looking at a page on my book marks (i.e an article about greek history on wikipedia) is that down- loading?

Well, maybe a little. Pages are typically "refreshed" when you go to them. So there is an exchange between your PC and the server on which that Greek history page resides.

Not really in the sense it's worth worrying about, downloading is where you download software such as an updated driver, utility program or productivity program, music, videos or films.

Along with the above, e-mails and the use of social network sites can all contribute to any download limit your ISP has imposed as part of the package you are paying for.

Even where you are allowed unlimited downloads your ISP may impose a fair-usage cap.

Whenever a webpage is being loaded that has images on it, those individual images need to be downloaded. The text also needs to be downloaded as well but that doesn't amount to much data. However, it all adds up if we are talking about data usage limit for your ISP. In addition, anything you upload counts toward that data limit so if you do something like send an email with some pictures of your latest vacation or whatever, those pictures will count against your data limit as well.

Most people only concern themselves with the "big" downloads but all the little stuff adds up as well.

Downloading:

• If you open a web page, information is downloaded to your PC.
• If you store your bookmarks remotely, they have to downloaded to your PC.
• I believe RSS feeds update, when you start your browser.

Not Downloading:

• If you are just looking at your bookmarks (e.g. in the Firefox library on your PC) you aren't downloading.
• If you are view files that are on your PC (e.g. certain program help docs) you aren't downloading.
