Downloads folder hijacked, no ransom note

My Downloads folder, the one that installs originally, has vanished along with its contents -- I think. I searched for one of the files and search (another newly unfathomable function) found it. It said it was in the downloads folder -- except that it wasn't. At least not in any downloads folder I could find. Nothing is in the recycle bin, and I restored my default libraries as directed by Win 7 help, but when I click on the restored downloads folder I get a message that says I can't open it because it's not associated with a program, blah, blah, blah. (I could tell you exactly what it says but Microsoft -- which can't go out of business soon enough to suit me -- won't let you copy and paste error messages.) And since when does a folder have to be associated with a program to open? Why can't someone make a simple, GUI operating system that connects your machine to your programs and lets you take care of the rest? But I digress. My real question: Where the hell is my downloads folder/library?
