downloads folder takes time to populate

Hi, I noticed this first on my laptop a while ago now it has happened on my PC, essentially if or when i open my downloads folder it is empty it then takes ages to populate(the address bar slowly fills up green) all the other libraries are fine open straight away with all the files in place, it only happens in downloads

anyone any ideas?

Happens to me with different folders and seems to be random. Sometimes it populates quickly, other times slowly with the green bar crawling across. Very annoying. I've not found any way to fix it, though I would really love to do so.
