Drive encryption

So I have windows 7 Pro x64, and there is a drive encryption tool. Its not BitLocker, however it still encrypts the drive. I think.. What exactly does it do? and is it worth using it? When I googled it, all I got was BitLocker... But that is only in Ultimate.

You must be referring to the "windows encrypting file system." Try googling that and you will get lots of info. But basically it does not do full drive encryption in the way that Bitlocker can. For those files that you encrypt with it, they are secured from other user accounts on your system.

I believe, however, that those files are still vulnerable to people removing your drive and accessing or hacking into your files from within another OS environment which is a common way of circumventing that kind of encryption. And it is this kind of attack that the full system drive encryption that Bitlocker provides is designed to protect against.

ahhhh I wish I had Ultimate then... I can upgrade for another $130... But I dont think its worth it just to get the BitLocker and AppLocker...

Neither do I. The only reason I have Ultimate is because of Technet and being a Launch Party Host. I would have gotten Pro at the $30 student price otherwise cause my alumni .edu email address qualified. I haven't used even used Bitlocker yet but will probably at least start using Bitlocker to go on flash drives eventually to get my feet wet with it.

Well is there any advantage to having drive encryption? I am behind a NAT, so I do not think it is that necessary, but I wanna be sure.

Would it slow down my system at all? If it wont, then I will install it just for fun. But if it will slow it down, and I wont get any great increase in safety, then im not gonna waste my resources.
