I have 2 hard drives in my OPTIPLEX GX620 (ancient) connected to SATA ports 0 & 1. Both hard drives I am sure are good because I can connect either one of them to SATA port 0 & the BIOS system recognizes them. However, when I connect either one of them to SATA port 1 I get Drive ID =: Unknown message. BIOS indicates that ON is enabled.

What else can I do to diagnose the problem? By the way the WINDOWS Disk Mgr does not see the drive connected T SATA port 1 either.

Welcome to the forum. Starting the obvious have you tried another cable and if you only have one disk in on port 1 is that seen? If the bike isn't seeing it's a hardware fault you could try resetting the CMOS disabling the port then reenable it or even a bios upgrade. Is the mb clean free from dust?

The cable is not the issue

Samurai,

I disconnected the cable to SATA port 1 & reconnected it to port 0 & the computer booted fine. So the cable seems OK. Regarding upgrading the BIOS, how do you do that? Regarding dust, there is some, but it is not horrible.

I found the problem

The location of port 1 is in a different location. I had another OPTIPLEX GX 620 that appears the mother board has died. The location of port 1 on that one is adjacent to port 0. On this other GX 620 it is different.
