DRIVE LETTERS

i have sata disk 640 Gb and ide disk 80 Gb...i have asus m2n.i will reinstall completly windos 7,...i want to have 2 partition on sata,and 1 partition on ide disk...I want my sata disk to have drive leters : :c and :d ,and my ide e:.....Now i have not god ,c: is system of windows,d: is of ide,and e : is assigned to second partition of sata.....

Hi, and welcome to the forums,,!!

Right-click computer > manage > diskmanagement > locate the drive then right-click again > follow options to driveletter > change the letter... Hope this helps.

Follow SmurofNeves advice for changing drive letters but make sure you change the PRESENT drive D: to something like L: first. Then change your PRESENT E: to D: and lastly change L: to E: This is because you cannot have 2 drives with the same drive letter so you need to make letter "D" available first before switching another drive to it. You will probably be best doing a reboot following completion of the changes

just leave it as it is. based on my experience. i had problems after changing back the drive letters the way i want them to be. see my posts.

You cannot change System drive letters, but it isn't needed since Win7 will take C wherever it is installed, unless install is run from another OS holding C.

Data drives letters are interchangeable in Disk Mgmt using steps given.

It can sometimes be problematic on an established installation, but for fresh installations where it's an essentially 'clean slate' - there is no harm.

It's one of the first things I do with a fresh installation, simply to avoid future conflicts.

Windows assigns the drives based upon drive order. It basically ignores the partitions when it comes to the drive order.The first drive gets C, the second drive gets D and third third, if installed gets E. Normally you have to change the drive letters to set the order the way you want.

Another option is to go to Folder Options and under the View tab, uncheck "Show drive letters". Works for me.
