Driver installation post sysprep (or BSOD)

Hello,

I am currently building an image for work with all the drivers required to support all of our models. So far, i am able to properly inject all of the drivers and distribute the image without an issue, all except one driver.
Intel USB 3.0 EXtensible Host Controller driver. For some of the models, when installing the drivers automatic before windows loads, it stops with a BSOD.

I would like to have the driver installed automatic, but only if needed. As if the PC does a "Scan for Hardware Changes", notices it needs the drivers, then installs them from where i put them. Is this possible?

I can put the drivers on a desktop of the admin, and install them manually of course. It only takes a few seconds. However with the model in question, it requires these drivers to be installed before any of the usb ports work at all. I am forced to use PS2 keyboard and mouse , which is a problem with our KVM.

I would appreciate any advice at all, as i cannot find the answer to this particular issue in the forums.

USB 2.0 ports don't work until USB 3.0 driver installed? That's very odd and sounds problematic itself as that shouldn't be the case. Have you checked for a BIOS update on that machine model?

It is a HP Elitedesk 800 G2, 64Bit windows 7, and we have a few hundred of them. I only just started working on them so i dont have much exposure but the first dozen or so are acting this way. I cannot connect them to the internet at this time so i downloaded the generic windows usb drivers off a different pc and tried those, but
the problem persists. As long as the usb hub is an uninstalled device in device manager, usb does not function.

I will check into the bios update, thank you. However if i could install the drivers post sysprep that would work also, even if it is avoiding the other issue for now.

Also, in order to avoid the BSOD on the other models, i would need to install those drivers after windows has loaded. If i would use only one master image, which is my goal.

To best my knowledge, upon booting a Win 7 PC with USB 3.0, the USB 2.x ports should work (USB 2 uses a generic driver in the OS). Should only be USB 3.0 won't work until the 3.0 driver is installed

However, IMHO Before you can tackle sysprep, you need to discover/fix why USB 2.x doesn't work upon boot. If you just recently arrived, I'd ask others there how long this USB 2 problem existed. I'd be surprised if this has always been the case. I should think it worked correctly in the past!????

That said, from what I could see at HP support site for that HP model there is a very recent BIOS update dated May, 2016. And HP release notes says it's "Urgent". Release notes don't mention fixing a USB problem but sounds like it's needed in any case. I'd also reinstall the chipset drivers found on the HP support site. Then retest on the machine (and don't use the one you manually copied drivers from one machine to another - unless you can restore the disk image first)

Also, if you can remote desktop to the PC, it'll probably be easier then messing with the PS/2 mouse. Just remote connect from another computer.

I assume you mean the usb controllers? You should look in device manager and check the controllers.

If problem persists, boot the machine and do the following BEFORE you install USB 3.0 (while the USB 2.0 problem exists)

List any Problem devices

• Click the Start Orb, type msinfo32 in the search box. Hit Enter
• Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
• Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
• If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
• On the other hand, if no devices are listed, tell me so

Generate and attach a DirectX report

• Click Start, enter dxdiag in the search box
• When DxDiag opens, look along the buttons at the bottom of the DxDiag window
  ===> If you’re running 64 bit Windows, you’ll see a 64-bit DxDiag button. Click it to run the 64-bit version of dxdiag
• Notice progress in lower left window corner
• When done, click Save Information button and save as a text file to your Desktop
• Upload the file to your next post

Just a thought.

I don't know what your setting are in the bios but you could check your bios for setting in (similar) to and see if they are enabled. They are listed in my Asus bios. You may or may not have these options in your bios.

You said you're getting BSOD on other models as well? Do you have multiple USB class drivers in your image? Let's see what USB class drivers are in your image and their version numbers.

Run DISM on your offline image using the /Get-Drivers /Format:Table options. Redirect DISM output to a .csv file. Zip the file and attach to next post
