First lets do this....

1. Click on Start
2. Type in "Device Manager"
3. Under "DVD/CD-ROM drives", highlight your device
4. Right-click and choose uninstall
5. Restart Windows

If that doesn't work....you might be getting this error if the DVD drive is not being recognized by Windows. You may try downloading the ‘Fix’ from below and then run it. That will automatically fix the issue. If that does not work then follow the steps given below.

To download the ‘Fix it’ follow the link.
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

This happened if the registry entries have got corrupted, to resolve the issue you will have to change the registry entries.

Steps to follow:
1. Click Start -> All Programs.
2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
3. Type regedit, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately the fix will not help you further
9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
11. Exit Registry Editor.
12. Restart the computer

Sorry the instructions weren't basic but this isn't a basic issue sadly :p

Hi
I have the same issue on a neighbour's Compaq laptop. Attempted to install Norton IS 2010 on top of 360. Disc booted fine, but a message asked me to uninstall N360 before continuing. Did this and, hey presto, the same problem as discussed above appeared. Now I've got no protection and can't install it!
Have entered the registery, located the "Upper Filters" line, but there is no "Lower fiters" line. What do you think of the line "
Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately the fix will not help you further"? Does this mean the fix should not be used at all, or does it mean I should remove the Upper filters line and see if that works?......sorry, just being a bit wary! Thanks for any thoughts.
