HELP please... I have configured a Samsung laptop for a neighbour but can't turn off tapping, which I need to do to make the laptop usable for my neighbour, who is elderly.
The incumbent driver is from Elan (? ).

I have tried the latest driver from the Samsung website
I have tried a Synaptics driver

None of them deliver a 'disable tapping' button...

Anybody able to offer a solution / driver that allows this basic functionality?

Thanks!

How about an external mouse mate wired or not and just disable the touch pad altogether when the mouse is plugged and it comes back on when the mouse is taken out . I do that with all my laptops as I find the touch pad really very irritating.

Also if the user is then finding it difficult to manipulate the machine via the touch pad the external mouse is going to be so much easier:)

Nope...

Thanks but an external mouse is not an option.

I really need to find a driver that will allow me to disable tapping, yet still allow use of the touchpad & buttons.

Any pointers welcomed...

Well that leaves me wondering why if the person using the machine cannot use a mouse then how dose the touch pad get used?

I don't know of any "drivers' that will do what you want it to do. My other curiosity is what does the tapping actually do? I don't mean to be rude but I have been a registered nurse for 40 + and I immediately think that the operator must have a very bad tremor for it to be a problem.

Sorry I could not be of any help:(

The user has the notebook on her lap, whilst sat in an armchair. There is no space for an external mouse to be used.
In common with many people, I find 'tap to click' deeply irritating and disable it on any laptop I use, to avoid inadvertent clicks / selects / mistypes etc that routinely occur. My user is in her 70s and it's not a tremor problem, it's just that the touchpad is way too sensitive to make use of the laptop enjoyable...
Trouble is I cannot find a way, with any driver, to disable tapping. It's pretty basic stuff I'd have thought since every other laptop I've ever used I've been able to disable it...

Again... any advice / pointers / registry hacks etc that people have used are welcomed here!!!
Thanks!

I assume you've been through both the touchpad software and windows mouse properties? Adjust the tapping delay?

Aside from that, it's typically either enable/disable entire touchpad which is not what is needed.

So what I'm hearing is that ... there are some laptops on which it is impossible to disable tapping. Clearly, since the common (eg Synaptics) drivers have that ability, so it must be something in the laptop build that prevents it.

It's not an OS facility to allow 'tap to click' to be ena/disabled. I believed that the driver gave you the facility. Seems that the driver can be overridden by something (firmware?) in specific laptop builds / brands / models.

Is this right?

Well now I know the exact circumstances P I know what you are trying to do I had visions of someone with a bad tremor if I knew then what I now know I wouldn't have suggested that.

Now I think you could get onto the machine manufacturer and ask what can be done but I wouldn't be holding your breath.

Having said that don't you know of anyone with a few wood or metal working skills that could make a clip on tray with an area for a mouse? It couldn't be that hard - I am just trying to think outside the box here mate. Another possible would be one of those up / down adjustable tables on castors like the ones we have in hospitals that could be wheeled in and out at leisure - and over the arms of the chair.
If the straight basic table would not fit then a top cut to a "T" shape. If you can do this the pad can be just disabled.

Solved (better late than never).

Just in case it's not fixed yet, you have to go to the search on the charms bar, then type in 'control panel'. Click on the control panel on the left hand side and a full menu will appear in alphabetical order (If you go to the control panel any other way, the option you will need will not be there). Once in the control panel, click on 'Touchpad' NOTE: Touchpad does not appear in Device Manager or indeed anywhere else. Once there, you will be able to untick the tapping box.

Took me a whole day to work it out, but I have noticed thousands of people have the same problem.

Hope it helps someone in the future anyway. ;)
