Hi Chev,
new thread, re 54mpbs increase, didnt want to hijack the other.

Downloaded/installed the latest realtek 8188ce driver,
BUT
under the advanced settings there is still no choice to upgrade purely to n.
is there another way???.

You are over here now, the settings I was referring to are in the Routers set up page for wireless, these are just the basic settings that all routers have.

You need to use the "Manual" wireless settings, you should see a setting called Mixed "802.11 a, ,b , g, n," etc. you need to use the 802.11n Only setting there. This setting won't work with legacy devices, won't support G or below devices anymore, just N. This is the only way to achieve true wireless N speeds.

You can also try the channel bonding setting which shows up as 20Mhz-40Mhz or 40Mhz setting, these settings will allow you to use the bandwidth from two channels but you need a good connection for this to work right.

After making the adjustments you can check your wireless status to see the connection speeds. :)
