Driver will not install after update

For some reason the driver for my large format scanner will not install stating it is missing a file in the TEMP folder, however when I open it it is there. (It stopped working, along with my other printer drivers at the update) I tried shutting off firewall entirely, and turning on read/write permission on the user folder but nothing avails. I even did a system restore but could not go back beyond the first update which is where the problem started I guess. Any suggestions? Also the Remove or restore function of the installer shows same error.

Which Temp folder? The one under Windows or the one under Program Files (x86)? Sounds like the driver was installed to the wrong location. You should not have to change permissions for the Program Files folder and the drivers should not be loaded to Windows folder. That's why it's locked.

The temp folder in the Users/UserName/AppData/Temp/(resource file). The thing is the driver installer will not do anything else, nor does it provide an option to re designate where it puts that installation source. The error message reads: "Setup could not find a file on the specified path or disk", although it appears to be there, that is why I thought it was a permissions problem. The scanner driver does not show up in the Programs Install Control panel so I cannot uniinstall it that way either. Then after I close that dialog it says: "Error -1612 The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." The device manager only leads to the same uninstall/install wizard, so that does not help. While this happened after I updated Windows 7, in fact the installer is buggy for not allowing a different destination, but so far I am stumped what to, except a clean install I am not thrilled about. Also I tried to delete the Temp folder, but it has a lock icon on it and I cannot make any changes to it because the Explorer.exe uses it, and so it always says it cannot be deleted, nor can I change the security/permissions and remove the little lock icon. I was able to delete all but one file (unrelated I think) inside the Temp folder, but not the folder itself nor change permissions.

I would throw away all the scanner related files I could find, but I cannot identify them and besides I do not think it would address the core problem that the driver installer will not install elsewhere besides that temp folder, nor will it allow specifying a different search path if I was able to copy it, which so far I could not. I copied the entire Temp folder to the desktop, only to discover that install file was gone.

Which scanner?
Which set of drivers? (are you sure that they're 1: Win 7 compliant, and 2: 64-bit?)

Yeah, well it worked fine same settup as before, only difference came when I updated Windows. I also downloaded latest driver, as well as try the old on the CD. I managed to unistall using the latest driver available at the Mustek site (Chinese), but now it simply will not work, says scanner is not on or twain source not available, but it is in there. And it works fine on my laptop running Vista.

Okay, finally got it to work. I forgot the scanner will not work unless directly plugged into the main USB ports. It will not run from a hub apparently. Anyway, the alternative is $1,200 for the Epson large format scanner, so this cheap one from China is the best I can do. Still though, it works, and for $160, just a little buggy... thanks, - Cheers

Hmm - is the external hub self-powered? That can sometimes be a solution to that type of problem. (the power available is limited to the output from the single USB port on the PC if the hub is not powered, and this can reduce the available signal to a level where it gets buggy and causes problems)

The instructions for the scanner software specifically say that it must be plugged directly into a main USB port on the computer, not a hub port on the computer, which is rare. That is why it somewhat buggy, and that problem with the installer. I use a gaming laptop as my primary, and if I use one USB port it will not work, but one right next to it and it will. Anyway, not big deal... just frustrating until you figure that out.
