I attempted to back up to an external harddrive and met with a shut down

and the following msg:

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_ EQUAL

I also have had a problem with Windows action centre, firewall and homegroup not resolved by troubleshooters

MY PLAN WAS TO DO A WINDOWS 7 REINSTALL
