When I installed I created 3 partitions 'C' 'D' and 'E' and installed on the first one which shows under My Computer as 'C' However when I boot to an Acronis True Image Disc to make a Backup it sees my 'C' Drive as having 100mb and my system installed on 'D' drive it then renames my othe partitions as 'E' and 'F' If I backup what Acronis sees as 'C' and 'D' drives will this cause problems when I restore this Backup?

Many here are reporting that Acronis works OK with W7 ..
But I'm having problems with it ... Especially if I have a third Data partition.
There's a new version coming soon .. maybe they'll fix it.

All I can do right now is backup by Cloning to a spare HDD

Something is wrong, the Backup file from 'C' and 'D' came out as 11,230kb and was copied in about 10 seconds. I am using True Image 11.

Ken

If I have a third data partition after C ...
Nothing
works as long as the 3rd data partition is on the HDD.
I can't even boot from the ATI boot CD or the W7 DVD.

I suspect that there's something unique about my computer .. Bios ???

If I remove the 3rd data partition .. then recover ..
It takes Two repair installs from the DVD to fix it.

The new ATI is in Beta testing now.

ATI 11 or the latest Home2009 ... I've tried it in a W7-32 and 64 install.
Is there a 64 bit version of ATI ???

If this isn't fixed .. It will be a W7 show stopper.
I refuse to put my ~~200gig of Data in my System partition.

Looks to me like having the extra W7 Boot partition will be a real annoyance.

You know I dont know abt ati 64bit. Im running an old (ati2009 rev 9.6) and have 6 partitions on the first drive with no problems. Yeah I really dont know what I would use if acronis didnt work. I dont like win 7 built in, and Norton Ghost yuch.

No data on system partition is one of my comandments.

Like I said .. I suspect there's something unique about my HP bios.
M$ should have me as a tester .. If it will go wrong .. It'll happen to me.

Acronis sees 'C' as 100mb and 'D' as 97GB - My Computer sees 'C' as 172GB and 'D' as 97GB 'D' is formatted but empty.

Well yeah Acronis is backing up what it sees as c (100mb system part) and D (win 7 operating system) and probably you have it set to incremental so all it is backing up is the files that have changed.\

I think what you really want to back up is C (hidden 100mb) D (win 7) and E (data maybe)

I think I can see the problem now, Acronis seems to be changing my Drive letters. It sees 'C' correctly as, System Reserved 100mb, but it sees my Operating System on, 'F' Drive 24GB used 172GB total. It has also reversed the Drive letters of my DVD drives.

The drive letters may correct themselves .. Once you boot to a recovered HDD.
Try it and cross your fingers.

Have you considered using a different Imaging app.?

If you only want to use it for drive/partition imaging, Macrium Free works superbly ( true native 32 and 64 bit program )- you may be surprised how efficient it is:

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

If you want to file and folder backup, and incremental/differential - you need the paid version.

I also use Paragon Hard Disk Manager for my file/folder and partition/drive backups. - they don't claim Win7 support ( they will claim it on the repackaged 10 series - marketing as ever ).

However, it does support 7, it works perfectly on my 7x64 system.

Thanks SIW2, I'll give it a try. I have always liked Acronis and never had any problems till now. I found when I used it this time, after building a new system, it didn't recognise my SATA drive and told me 'No hard drive found' However after speaking with Acronis and telling them I was using Win 7 that problem was solved, but the changing of the drive letters is a new one. I really only used to like copying the 'C' drive as a restore left all my other partitions untouched.
