DRM?

Err...I know this is probably an old question/situation. I haven't ripped cd's in years.
I just noticed that 7 lets you just rip n rip n rip.
What happened with all the DRM issues a few years ago? Or is it just lurking in the background and all of these mp3s I've ripped can't be transferred to my phone to listen to when I jog?

I have had absolutely no issues with mp3 playback, regardless of source--but I play back only on a PC, not on a mobile device.

I'd be interested in other's experience on all types of devices regarding DRM.

Interesting question. Id like to know the answer to what happened to all of it as well.

If you r/click the MP3, choose properties and details
youll see a listing Protected: ... telling you the DRM state

All mine say NONE
So, I tried ripping a CD with Zune, and Media Monkey both
and the results of both show no DRM.
Unless Im overlooking it or its actually hidden somewhere else

ive never had a issue syncing them to a Walkman either.

Cant say iv had any probs to mention, i seem to remeber it was sony who went a bit mad with copy protection including rootkits on some of there discs but i dont think they do that any more

That it what I was refering to YES. Perhaps i should of rephrased as they both show they are not protected.

I was assuming it meant DRM protection, or at kleast was my understanding, although I could be mistaken.
I was curious as well and hoping others may know more about it.

There is an option in Windows media player to add drm when you rip a cd.
Why in the **** you would want to is beyond me.

I saw that "option" as I sat up the player and wondered that myself. Of course, it's an OPTION now and before, it wasn't.
So...I thought I had slept too late and something had changed and I didn't know it.

Ok..well, it's all good.
I am SOOOOO in love with 7!
Thank goodness I had some BSODs and thus justified the upgrade.

Seems like a good place to be.

I had to come back here and post how totally great 7 is!
I have just ripped my entire cd collection onto my hd, created some playlists, synced my EnVtouch easily thru Windows Media, and now my songs are ready to play while I workout or mow the yard.
WOW...no third party Rhaposdy to deal with and nobody saying..you don't have the rights to do this...
How freeing!

It's my understanding that MP3 has no DRM capability built into it. If you were ripping into WMA, you would want to make sure the copy protect option was not checked, of course.
My solution is not to rip into any lossy codec. I rip with EAC, which is a better ripper than WMP or iTunes, and I rip to .flac. Then from there, I "convert to new destination" to either LAME MP3 VBR, WMA VBR, or m4a for use on my Sony and Samsung players.

Hi there

+1 for FLAC which I use for my Squeezebox system -- it will also play 24 bit 96 khz flac files -- better than CD quality at 16 bit 44.1 (or 48) khz.

You can then copy that to mp3 or whatever for other players such as Sony walkmans or Ipods.

Why you would WANT to add DRM is beyond me.

Uh...just to clear up..mine works perfectly.

It wasn't really a question now, but more of a confirmation that apparently you can rip mp3 and transfer to a device without DRM becoming an issue.

Digital Rights Management? DRM? they should've called it Content, Restriction, Annulment, and Protection. Crap for short
