Dual ATI Radeon 5870 vs ATI Radeon 5970

what?

well first, am not gonna spend 1,300 for dual 5970's, its between those 2, the monitor that am currently gonna buy is a 1920X1080 HD, between both graphic card what would give me less lagg, smooth game play, basically overall better gaming performance's? and is it a big difference?

Then you're better off with a single Radeon HD 5970.

A couple Radeon HD 5870s would make sense if you were planning on gaming at something like 2,560 x 1,600.

I just bought my second 5850. Idont have a clue how to run Crossfire, but ill have to learn. My pops ran it back in the day and said it was really screwy with it being so new. Im curious how it is now. He's ANTI SLI/CROSSFIRE

Here's one 5970 review that includes some 2 X 5870 tests. The pair of 5870s is usually faster than a single 5970, as expected.

Radeon HD 5970 Single card and Crossfire review

That's not to say that the crossfire rig is more practical.

I don't do a lot of gaming, but I wonder whether a single 5870 might suffice for a 1920 X 1080 monitor.

Incidentally: I'm not sure of this, but I believe that a 2GB 5970 compares to a 1GB single card. Each GPU needs its own VRAM, and the data are duplicated. It has been that way since the first dual-GPU systems (3dfx Voodoo2).

Loses some, wins some.

Like I've been saying since day one.

You'll only be seeing real advantages over a 5970 in extreme high resolutions setups. Since he'll be gaming at 1,920 x 1,080, a single Radeon HD 5970 will be more than enough (we sometimes forget that we're talking about the single fastest video card on the planet right now).

exactly plus you have to account the extra heat from two cards instead of one, the 5970 would be the better option

Yeah, suffice, but if you wanna play every single game on the planet with EXTREEME graphics, the 5970 is freaking awesome. If you have the doe. If not, i recommend 4890 or the 5870

i hope fermi fails :D
i do to halfway....... i hope they come out but arn't as fast as the 5800 line

Why on earth would you want that to happen?

If Fermi fails, then ATI has no incentive to make a better card... which is what you want... so you're hoping against self-interest, which makes very little sense to me. :sarc:

I got a 5850 and run 1920 res just fine. It's a big card but the 5970 is an inch longer.

Also depends on your mobo, mine is crossfire compatible, but the first card slot is pci-e x16, the second is pci-e x 4. (in which case I'd only get a forth of the bandwidth from card 2), so one faster card is better than two with a limited 2nd.
