Hi

I have W7 installed in C , Now I want to install XP in other partition (D) in the same HD, to work on dual boot.

I ask help from you because I could not do the installation by the obvious method: installing XP by booting its installation CD and choosing the D partition for the system, my W7 stopped to work, I had to repair it with W7 installation CD.

Thanks

Hi stereomind,

If you install XP after a newer o/s - you will need to "repair" the newer o/s boot management.

It can be done with the startup repair function on the dvd - as you did, or with Easybcd.

You can add the entry for XP to the NT6 bcd at the same time with Easybcd.

It is all in Shawn's tuorial.

Presently, I have a dual boot with XP on one drive & 7 on another. Everything works just great, but I regret installing them on separete drives. I'd like to put them both on one drive. Is there an easy way to migrate everything from my XP drive (OS progs & settings) to a partition on my 7 drive (or visa versa) and dual boot like nothing's changed?

Excellent! I'll post the screenshot tomorrow morning when I get home from work. I'm thinking it would probably make more sence to move Se7en to the XP drive since there's less to move.

Wait, I was wrong. There could be enough space on your XP drive to move the 7 partition over to it. But you will first need to shrink the partition.

BTW, it will probably require that you move or delete the pagefiles and hibernation files. Also, be sure to clean up any unnecessary stuff like temp files before you begin.

Looks a bit tight.

69.24-19.82 = 49.42gb used on 7 partition.

Only 39.77gb free on XP partition .:(

Agreed. It doesn't look easy, but it can be done since he has ~152 GB free space on that data drive to move stuff around.

Well, I just deleted my FSX and addons from the Se7en drive and I now have 41.90 GB free there. That helps, eh?

Yep.

69.24 - 41.9= 28gb used on 7 drive you still want at least 10gb breathing space on the 7 partition.

You will need a 38gb partition to move it onto.

If you shrink 38gb from XP now - you will have 1gb free on XP partition.

It can be done - can you move some stuff from Xp to the data partition - 10gb would be good.

Remember, you can delete pagefiles and hibernation files from the OS that isn't currently running. And for the OS that is currently running, you can move them to the data drive and reboot. That will free up quite a bit of space depending on how much RAM your computer has.

Hmmm... that's still pretty darn tight. I think I'll look into getting a SSD for FSX and leave the 2 OS drives alone.

Thanks guys. You just saved me from some serious heartburn. Thanks again.

Thank you Shawn and others for reply.
I am having trouble in the XP installation, after the files were copied to HD, on the first boot, the installation freezes in the moment that is asked to press any key for CD boot.

I have tried to change the boot to HD on setup, but it didn't work.

Hi,

You boot the cd - it asks then to press any key- then it loads files?

After that, does it ask you again to press any key to boot from cd?

You may be better using the boot pop up menu.

Press F11 for boot menu (or whatever F number it says on the Bios screen almost immediately after you start the machine ).

Arrow down to cdrom drive - put the install cd in - press enter - in a few seconds it will ask "press any key to boot from cd" - press Enter again.

The next time it reboots it reverts to previous boot order - the pop up menu is one time only.

Ok, lets review the procedure that I did:

1. On the bios setup page I set "CD" for first device to boot
2. Win XP installation starts
3. I select the correct partition
4. Installation loads the files to HD
5. At some point I'm informed that the system will restart and the installation will continue. I am asked to remove disk from floppy drive.
6. I do nothing, the system restart
7. At the starting black screen, when it displays "Verifying DMI poll data..." the machine freezes.

Thanks
