Dual boot prob: xp won't install

Newbie, please help. My laptop had Vista, I then upgraded to Win 7. I want to do a dual boot with 7 and XP (I miss my old programs). I followed the tutorial to set up a partition, far as I can tell that worked. But when I try to boot xp from disk it starts the install but then stops saying something like: if this is the 1st time seeing this message restart your comp,(Idid same result) or if you are seeing this again run virus scan( I did came up clean) or run CHKDSK/F (I ran 7's chkdsk, again no problem), also said something about removing new hard drives or programs, then message ended with: STOP: oxoooooo7b, oxf78d2524, oxcooooo34, oxoooooooo, oxoooooooo.
I have tried 2 different xp disks with same result. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Are you using the XP installer to format NTFS the partition you created? It uses a different partition table.

Where are you getting the XP disks you tried? What does it say on them?

I couldn't get far enough into install to format the drive. As far as the disks, 1 is my XP Pro, and the other is one I borrowed from my dad, both got hung up at same point. I did read something about XP not having the drivers built in to control SATA. Also found a tutorial to add drivers to your XP disk, but I haven't tried it yet

I got mine to work! You need to make a new installation disk. Here's what I did: You will need to find the driver for your SATA controller and download it. Try going to Manufactures site first.( if you are having trouble figuring what driver, download a program called Everest Ultimate a free download you will find through google, it will give you the info to help find the driver)
First make sure you have enough space to make a copy of XP onto your computer, (it will fit on a CD-r so its less than 700mb)
Then you will need to copy your XP disk using a program called Nlite (free from cnet)
When you open Nlite you will be asked to provide location for the Windows installation package, insert your XP disk, and select drive letter in the application, when the warning pops up click ok and select your destination folder, the app will start copying XP. When finished it will display some version info. Next click next until (twice I believe)you get to screen that gives you the options of Integrate, Remove, Setup, and Create, you will need integrate, then select drivers and click next. Now you will click insert and select multiple drive folder option from the drop down menu, select the folder where you downloaded the SATA drivers. Select the containing directory and click next. You will get a list of available driver(s) select it/them and click next. Now the program will ask for permission to start the integration process, choose yes and wait for the drivers to be inserted into the installation package. You will now have the driver in XP.
Open nlite again, make sure your XP destination folder is selected, click next. select "last session" preset and click next. Now choose Bootable ISO. In the next window make sure mode is set to "create image" and click make ISO. A destination folder is required for the ISO image to be saved. Once saving process is complete you can burn the ISO folder onto CD-R ( will need an ISO burner, 7 has one built in, or go to Cnet) This is you new and improved XP install disk, you should now be able to install XP.
I hope this works for you, repost if any of my instructions are unclear.

P.S. Once you get XP installed you may have more missing drivers. I couldn't get online and figured out that my ethernet port needed a driver. Check device manager and look for the yellow question marks. The Everest program will help.

Congrats on a job well done. Slipstreaming driver(s) into an installer is a major task, made only slightly easier by Nlite.

Strange that XP installer didn't ask you to insert driver at some point before erroring out, but it must have been completely flummoxed by the SATA.

Thanks Gregrocker. I did all of that to be able to use Microsoft Picture It as it isn't supposed to be compatible, but my dad just told me he installed it on Win 7 and it works! Go figure, but it was a cool project anyway.

hi pikasso, great job figuring out how to install it, thanks for great help, i remember in the very begining of the xp installation it asks me if i want to install a raid or sata driver and i just ignored it. i think i had exact problem though, i had vista, than i installed windows 7, then i installed xp and it loaded some drivers in the begining , than said it was starting up than i got the bsod with the same message. im going to try and find the driver for the sata, il let you know if i am sucessful, thanks for the everest ultimate tip

You can add the driver during installation...but only if you have a floppy drive! I thought those went out with cassette tapes.

hi picasso!, im back at it again thanks for the detailed thread, im stuck on finding the right sata driver though, my sony vgn-aw120j does not have drivers for xp on the sony website and toshiba does not have drivers on theirs. my hard drive is a mk-3252gsx from toshiba. looks like i have to put in some study time, any help or tips would be great, thank you so much
