To have Vista x86 on one disk and W7 64 on another. How to best ensure virus protection and firewall?

Both OS's need their own respective AV protection and firewall. When you boot Win7, it has no idea what kind of applications you have installed on Vista. It is like having two completely separate computers.

Yes, if you are using licensed commercial software you will need 2 licenses for each install. Same thing with your operating system. You need a license for Vista and a license for 7.

Lighting the flare: I have McAfee today, but find it a bit heavy. Is the latest version lighter or should I consider a competitor?

Not totally sure. I use Trend on my work computer because that is what my company uses.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on my own personal machine and I have used both AVG and Avast in the past and felt they were about even with other.

You could try Microsoft Security Essentials, free download here. It's quite light, completely free and, in fact, quite good. I'm using it on 4 computers and 3 virtual machines.

hi !

Yes, if you are using licensed commercial software you will need 2 licenses for each install. Same thing with your operating system. You need a license for Vista and a license for 7.

that is not entirely correct, some Antivirus-programs & firewalls come with a license allowing it to be used on more than 1 computer, and others allow the software on 2 or more operating systems on the SAME computer, so it depends on what the license says.

Would Symantec offer a licence valid for Internet Security on both 32 bit Vista and 64 bit W7 or would I have to buy two copies?
