After setting up partitions per Shawn's tutorial for dual booting Windows 7 and XP, the Windows XP installation disc boot did not show "Welcome to Setup" screen or "Windows XP Licensing Agreement" screen or the list of partitions screen. Instead it went directly to a "Windows Setup" screen and after loading several drivers it gave a "Starting Windows" screen. Immediately the BSOD appeared with errors 0x0000007b, 0xf78d2524, 0xc000004 and 0x00000000.

I tried two different Windows XP setup discs nd got the same result with both.

Hi Jonathan_King,
I didn't load SATA drivers. I did get a "PressF6" message on the Windows Setup screen. System Information on the Win7 computer lists Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller with the driver as instor.sys. The tutorial you referenced asks to put the driver on a floppy (not a flash drive). My laptop doesn't have a floppy. What do I do instead?

I was able use nlite to get a copy of Windows XP Professional CD to a file ready for the ISO burn. (The Window XP Home CD I tried first kept giving a Cyclic Redundancy Check error so I went to the Pro version.)

The Intel download location you suggested had an iata97enu.exe SATA file that looked right the Windows 7 32 bit that's on my target computer and Windows XP Home or Professional for the second OS. It's for the iastor.sys driver that's on the target computer. I thought it might be a self executing compressed file but when I ran it on my older IDE laptop it tried to install the driver and advised that the computer was not compatible. nlite wants an *.inf file to integrate so I'm stuck.

Where do I go from here?

Your suggestion to SATA Drivers tutorial on Windows Seven Forums was very helpful. That information would be good for the Method Two of the Dual Boot Installation tutorial. Incidentally Softpedia.com had a Tips & Tricks "Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy" article that gave a nice explanation of why the change from IDE to SATA drives.

Hurray!

OK I got the 32 bit drivers to match my Windows 7. and unzipped it into a file "SATA Driver". The screens in nlite for locating the drivers don't quite look like those in the tutorial but I selected "multi" and got a list of for several Intel Controllers. I selected "Intel(R)Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller" from the list because that's what I found in System Information > Components > Storage > IDE in the Windows 7 computer. I then made a WinFile.iso CD. When I booted it on the new computer IT WORKED!!!!

Thank you so much for your patience and help. I won't have made it without you and the Forum.

The one thing I have left is the screen resolution. The highest that XP offers is 1024x768. My Toshiba laptop offers 1366x768 so the screen looks stretched. Do you happen to know how to improve it?

Check Custom Windows Updates for a newer display driver.

Then check Toshiba website Support Downloads webpage for a newer Display driver for your model computer.

As a last resort, check Intel's Support Downloads page for your exact named Display Adapter in Device Manager.

If Device Manager only shows Standard VGA Driver for Display, you'll need to research your System Specs to find out exactly what Graphics Chip you have to browse for driver at Intel.

I got the XP screen resolution fixed with a Graphics Media Accelerator HD driver from Intel. I still don't have a modem or sound. Device Manager shows yellow question marks for Audio High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem device on High Definition Audio Bus, Network Controller and SM Bus Controller. Control Panel doesn't show any Modem in Phone and Modem nor any Audio Device in Sounds and Audio Devices. I did get a couple of XP modem driver from Toshiba's support site but they can't find the modem. If I could get a modem working, I might be able to get help in Windows Update. Any suggestions? :(

Thanks Theog but I should have explained earlier that I'm working on a new Toshiba L500 Satellite laptop. The Windows 7 partition shows the LAN and the dial-up modem works there so I shouldn't need hardware.

Looking at the Toshiba site, All the Win Xp drivers for the L500-ST2521 are listed.

Check the Toshiba site with full model No.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500-ST2544 with Windows 7 (32) as the main operating system. In Toshiba Support for that model they listed a "Toshiba Software Modem for Windows 7 (32)", TC0021400E.exe file which in the download detail page lists as working for Windows 7 (32) and Windows XP SP2/SP3. My XP partition has XP Professional to which I added SP3 so that looked like a good and the only choice. When I unzipped the file in XP and ran setup per the "ReadMe" I got an "Error: Can not find support device". Any ideas a to why it can't find the modem?

That's where I got the one I tried titled "Driver Modem" and got an "Error: Can not find support device". Do you see anything else there that might work? I also tried putting "Modem" instead of "Category" but didn't see any thing else that looked promising.

If you are still trying to slipstream SATA controller drivers in then you needn't worry about LAN drivers now, just the SATA ones.

Your issue may be something else so SATA drivers need to be inserted to see what changes.

Try also removing all but 2 gb of RAM, swap your RAM, test your RAM. Then run HD maker's full diagnostic/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Do you have the latest BIOS version update from computer or mobo maker's Support Downloads webpage for your model?

Try resetting the CMOS: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/clearcmos.htm

Theog: I'm not sure what a "dual-up modem" is but I'm trying to get a dial-up modem active in the XP partition so I can get updates to software and hardware. The modem works fine in the Win 7 partition. I did find in "Remove Programs" in Win 7, a modem driver "HD Audio Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP" v 7.80.4.50 with Conexant as the manufacturer. Is there a way to copy it into Win XP ?

Gregrocker: I'm working in a brand new Toshiba Satellite L500-ST2544 Laptop that came with Windows 7 (32) installed.
