Can I install Windows 8 on a secondary physical hard disk or a partition? Will both Windows 7 and 8 allow a dual boot?

Thank you for the great links!

Frankly, I still don't have the courage to install 8 because I am satisfied with 7 but a person has to keep up to date

Windows 8/Windows 7 Dual Boot

Hi Guys/Gals:

A week ago, I decided to finally install the latest version of Windows (8.1 Pro) on my existing Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I bought a new hard drive (1TB) and hooked it up. I popped in the Win 8 disc and started the installation. (I have a total of five hard drives in my giant full-sized computer). During the installation process, Win 8 detected the drives and provided an option as to which drive I wanted the OS to install. Of course, I pointed to the new drive, and the installation proceeded without a hitch.

When the installation completed, I set up a few minor things, and rebooted. During the boot process, I was greeted with a screen option to start with Windows 8 or Windows 7.

So far, I have had no problems whatsoever with this dual-boot configuration. Just wanted to let others know about my experiences. Also, I have always thought that a separate hard drive for dual-booting multiple Operating Systems has always worked best for me; as opposed to partitioning a single drive.

Just realize that, if the Win7 drive was connected when you installed Win8, it's most likely that Windows wrote the new bootloader files to the Win7 drive. The result of this is, if you ever remove or disconnect the Win7 drive, your PC won't boot into Windows anymore.

Boot loader I believe depends on which os is default,

win-8/ win-10 will call it's self the default on install,
Manual action is needed to switch from 8 or 10 to choose 7 as the default os in the boot order,
Cheers.
