I could only find one thread pertaining to my issue, so here I am again. I hope I've explained my issue & best way to resolve it.
Can I put my HDD with Windows 10 Pro (genuine Microsoft) in an external enclosure via e-SATA & use as well as my Windows 7 Pro on the HDD in my computer to use at my option? I've never tried a dual boot setup before; can I legally do so? Both are genuine Microsoft OS; the Windows 10 is on a HDD that is still good but the CPU or MOBO, maybe both died. I bought a refurbished computer from Dell that has Windows 7 Pro on it. NEED advice; I'd like to use 10 so as to become better acquainted with that OS, still learning.

You`re saying the W10 install is from another PC ?

The experts will let you know if you can transfer it. How did you obtain that W10 install ? Is it an upgrade from 7 or 8 ?

If it were me, and you could legally use that W10 install on different hardware, I would clean install 10 on that hardware, while your W7 drive is unplugged, then plug the 7 drive back in, and set your preferred operating system as default. Then just use the boot menu to choose W10 when you want to use it.

Is the refurbished computer from Dell a desktop or laptop. If it's a desktop, why don't you install it internally?
Is your Win 10 an OEM (came installed on the computer that failed)? If so, you cant run it as you have a different hardware.
As I know, Windows can't run on detached / mobile devices.

A lot of people switch HDD's in and out of comps, just using it like an old cd tray the same principal
BUT these tend to be custom builds.
Depends on your comp
if its designed to take a second internal drive
even some lappy's like my 8 yr old Acer have a second internal drive option:D

If you can install both on the same comp then i dont think there will be will be much of a problem with activation, IF it does fail (OEM), MS are being quite liberal about it at the moment, a quick call to them would more than likely sort it, Retail will not be a problem.


Why not a have a free 90 trial.
