Dual Boot XP and Win 7 - Remove XP

Hi

I hope someone can help on here.

I have 2 hard drives with XP installed on 1 and then i installed windows 7 on the other. On bootup i get the option to select the operating systems.

Now i want to only have windows 7 and remove XP completely so that i can format the hard drive with xp on and use as backup.

The problem is that when i switch boot sequence to boot off the win 7 hdd first, i get BOOTMGR is missing. I have tried the startup repair from the win 7 cd but it also fails with an error saying Missing boot manager.

If i switch back to use XP hdd as 1st boot device, i get the OS options screen again and can boot into both without issue.

Does anyone have any idea of how i can get rid of XP and boot with only windows 7 as first boot device?

Go to Start > Run type msconfig,. click the Boot tab,. select the XP entry and choose Delete.

Now do you have two partitions or two hard drives?

I have 2 hard drives. I looked in msconfig but only see Windows 7. There is no entry for XP.

Yes we do this here several times every day. It only needs your close attention.

Unplug the XP drive. Boot into the BIOS and set the Win7 drive to boot first after DVD.

Boot into your Win7 installer Repair console and run Startup Repair 3 times as there are multiple issues to fix after which it will rewrite your MBR.

Afterwards you can plug the XP drive back in and delete and format it as you wish.

Did you installed Win7 AFTER XP?
I guess THEN XP was on C:\!
Now you installed Win7 on the other HD... which... i guess again... was D:\ then?
Then Win7 installs the BOOTMGR on C:\ by default!!!!

I have no 100% Solution, but... my Lines gives you a little direction to do some Sherlock Holmes Researches.
Also... (if not have it allready) enable to see hidden System-Files, so you can better look exactly whats in C:\... that belongs to Win7!
Sorry for my bad english... i am german.
Anyway; May be you`ll find the Problem...if your Configuration is like i thought.

I write this, because i have the exact same Config on MY System:
- Had only XP installed... in C:\ HD-one.
- Installed Win7... in D:\... HD-two.
- Now a lot of Win7-Files are in C:\
I recommend using Easy BCD 1.7.2... that can fix such Problems!!!

I have managed to resolve my issue.

I had tried the windows 7 dvd and startup repair but that also kept showing an error saying boot manager was missing.

In the end i used EasyBCD 2.0 Beta, which has an option to reinstall the windows 7 boot loader. After doing this and then setting my windows 7 hard drive as first boot i was able to boot up from it. I was then also able to format the XP hard drive.
