Great forum Greg, 3 may 10
Have Dell Studio 17, with Win7, tried install XP first then Win7 first. ONLY Win 7 will install. After following Gregs excellent instructions, the XP OS will not install and this window/message Will appear: Possible virus or hardware configured incorrectly STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D663c, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x0000000). Win7 will install problem free every time. Even with reformatting the HD XP will not install.
It is a 64bit system, XP pro is 32bit, Win7 is 64bit. This is refurbished system from Dell
It will not do virturalization due to processer. I have XP software I need to run. Thanks for listening.

The 07B is an inaccessible boot volume, possibly caused by virus or messed up file system, or the lack of controller driver in XP installer for your HD which theog covers above.

Try running chkdsk /r from booted Win7 DVD repair console Command Line or Win7, then try XP install again.

Next backup your files and a Win7 System image then deep clean the HD to eliminate any virus, by running these commands:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (replace # with target HD #)
CLEAN ALL
EXIT

This zeroes the HD for deepest clean but takes a long time on large HD's.

(Which Greg are you referring to in your OP, and what advice?)

Thanks Theog. As you wrote the tutorial on slipstreaming SATA controller drivers into XP installer, I'll bet you recognize this error.

A virus or scrambled boot sector can probably be eliminated as cause by the successful install of Win7. But it never hurts to chkdsk /r the file system, run HD diagnostics, and zero the HD for cleanest possible slate. You can do all 3 using Partition Wizard CD.

Agree OP likely needs to slip the drivers in using floppy or slipstreaming method in your tutorial.

As this a laptop,with Win 7 installed.

diskpart
list disk
select disk
clean all

Will delete the Win 7 install. you would need to use list volume.

07b before Win XP is install is must likely to be no sata drivers installed.
