Dual monitor problem

I have a Geforce ENGTX 460
I have installed two monitors which both display. However one monitor is best at 1920x1200 but the other old monitor max is 1024x768
I have adjusted the screen resolution so that the older monitor is set at 1024x768 and adjusted refresh rate to 60Hz but the image is still too big for the screen and no icons display.
Any ideas?

This is a scaling issue.
You will need to open up your graphics card control panel, look for scaling in the menus, then make the adjustments.

Doesnt appear to work if I try scaling the smaller res screen down it forces the large screen to run at 1024x765 as well. I have tried every combination but cant get it to change

Duplicate or extended mode? Duplicate, also known as clone mode only works if both displays are the same resolution.

That could well be it stormy, in duplicate mode it works but the higher res monitor is forced down to the res of the lesser.
In extended mode the res is fine in both but I seem to be missing some of the screen. Its working now of a sorts at least, perhaps i'll have to get a better second monitor.

Is the 17" a CRT or LCD? If it is a CRT what refresh rate is it running at?

Its an LCD but a fairly old anda cheap one the refresh rate choices are 60, 65 or 70 I have it set on 60Hz

I find that if your primary monitor is your largest then the issue is less noticable. Not sure if that is an option.

Yes my primary is my larger. I seem to be coping with it as it is now. I had hoped to have icons and taskbar on both but that wont work unless I have them both at the low res which is unacceptable.
I will manage until I get round to upgading my second monitor

I use this program to put a taskbar on the other screens,
Realtime Soft UltraMon

It also allows you to easily have different wallpapers and screens savers on each screen.

For whatever reason Microsoft hasn't added the ability to have the taskbar on more than the primary monitor when using extended mode.

I had hoped to have icons and taskbar on both but that wont work unless I have them both at the low res which is unacceptable.

Unless you're looking to have identical monitors (clone mode) then you need one of the above to get a taskbar on each monitor. Icons on the other hand are as easy as just placing the ones you want on each monitor.
