Dual Sockets

Hello forum members!

Apple power macs are using Server based setups with dual socket intel xeon processors.

So in theory couldn't I buy a dual socket mobo and two identical cpu's and run windows on it, as task manager has set affinity and other features.

Has any moved on to dual sockets for general use and not server based machines in the community?

I haven't done it, but it's possible.

With two physical sockets, Win7 Pro or Ultimate would be required. (Home Premium only supports a single physical socket, although there's no limit on the number of CPU cores in that single socket.)

Throw in a couple of 6 core Xeons with Hyperthreading, and 24 CPUs would be shown in Device Manager.

If you run applications that can exploit that number of threads, it might even be worthwhile.
