duplicate photos software

can anyone suggest a decent software prog to easily find duplicate photos so they can be deleted please,

ive been sorting my pictures for quite a few years now without any kind of organisation copying folders to different hard drives for back up and now ive decided its time to sort the mess out and make proper copy's
im hoping theres some decent software out there that can this job a little easier.

I've used 2 such programs, both free.

Dupe Detector 3.2.1--this is strictly for images and pretty simple. You let it scan your folders to build a database and then let it run through them to find those that are similar. You can control how much similarity is required to generate a possible matching pair. It shows you each pair, side by side, so you can eyeball them and decide which to delete--if any. I use a setting of 97% similarity, which works well. It might take 10 minutes to an hour to build the database, depending on how many pix you have. I have about 20,000 and run the program every couple of years and always find a few dozen to a hundred or more that are dupes. This program will also show you the dimensions of each pic in pixels as well as the size in bytes.

Fast Duplicate File Finder: this is more complicated and not just for images, so you probably wouldn't want it--but it works OK if you have any reason to find non-image duplicates.

I don't have a link for either, but Google should run them down for you. There are no doubt others that work pretty well.
