This laptop does terrible video, youtube, netflx etc... Must be dropping lots of frames.

So I am trying different drivers and the laptop locks up.
So I restarted in safe mode, and the video is very good, smooth, normal looking.
No sound in safemode so that is not good to use as is.

I have rebooted back and forth, so was wondering what is safemode doing that the nvidia driver cant do in normal mode?

I have tried laptop2govideo for drivers. Running 296, 297 drivers, they can load but if I started chrome or firefox, the video after a minute locks up or turns black. I then discovered if you turn off aero, then the video will stay on, but the video playback quality is bad, jerky, etc...

So how can I get safemode type normal video quality and also have sound?

I know the video card is old but if safe mode looks good, cant it be made to work?
Also, safe mode the laptop is much quicker navigating file manager, everything seems peppy .

Hi sdowney717

I can't really help you much but seeing as you have had no replies I will try a little.

I suspect in normal mode your CPU (which according to a quick search is an AMD CPU with built in GO 6150 graphics) is overheating and causing this stuttering, in safe mode it's not put under nearly as much stress as not as many services are running. Often when CPU's overheat they throttle down in speed to save themselves, this in turn could cause the video issues you are having.

Are you able to monitor the CPU temps on it?

I could be way off the mark, but that's my thoughts on it anyway.

Paul.

For a test, disable all your startup programs in msconfig. If that helps, you'll have to find the one that is interfering by disabling them one by one.

interestingly, that netflix streaming works better compared to hulu or youtube flash.
netflix video gets out of sync with the sound., but video stays smoother looking.

Also html5 video streaming is good, better than netflix silverlight streaming

I am running 64 bit windows.

Who told you to overclock?

I would seriously advise against it in a laptop.

According to this - NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 - NotebookCheck.net Tech your GPU is intergrated into your CPU, I said that in my first post. I don't know what the maximum temp should be, but I don't think its a good idea overclocking.

You don't seem to be listening to anything we are posting in this thread, so I will bid you good day and best of luck with your problem.

well no, the gpu is separate ball grid array chip soldered on to the motherboard, not part of the cpu.

this laptop gpu runs about 71 on win7 and on ubuntu runs 65.
