Funny, I noticed this problem starting around the time I turned off autoplay, along with a few security updates from microsoft last week. It has to be something wrong in the registry, as other OSes I run on this HP laptop (Arch Linux) have never experienced such a problem.

In my isolated case, it seems to be an issue with autoplay. When I had autoplay turned off, I experienced my DVD drive disappearing from "My Computer" once I took a disc out. Going to device manager and selecting "check new devices" via right sometimes brought it back. Other times it either does nothing or states that there was an error installing the drivers. Now, once I set autoplay back to "ask every time" rather than "do nothing", my drive no longer disappears.

EDIT: Actually, the drive continues to disappear, but just not as much. Has anyone reported this to microsoft?
