Hi all,

About a two weeks ago my dvd drive stoped working (it could have been longer but I havent used the drive), this only a few weeks after upgrading to Windows 7.

When looking in device manager my DVD drive is not recognised and I'm stuck what to do next. The DVD drive has power to it but I can play or burn.

Is my DVD drive just broken or has windows 7 'lost it'

Have tried some of the regedit solutions but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas greatly appreicated. I'm a bit of a computer novice and am at a loss at what to do

An easy way to check if the DVD Drive is gone from Windows 7 or just plain gone is when your computer is booting up. Press either F2 or DEL to boot into the BIOS and check if that DVD Drive is listed under its installed devices (may have a different name in your BIOS).

Hi Darician,

It wasnt immediately obvious that it was listed as I wasnt sure what I was looking for.

I did notice that CD ROM was listed in the boot order and showing as enabled. Does ATAPTI CD ROM mean anything?

Does it show up in Device Manager ?

Is this a Laptop or Desktop PC ?

I'm not sure Jorton, i pointed you toward the microsoft fix as i used it myself only a few weeks ago when my disk drive had the same symptoms you described ,sorry it wasn't successful, hopefully someone else with more experience in these matters will be able to further assist.

Thanks anyway, it was working ok a few weeks back but went to watch a DVD the other night and stopped.

I'm guessing that this is a case of a broken CDROM

Did anything happen to the laptop before this started? Sounds like something has happened to it, which has maybe made a connection come loose. But, to fix this (if it is the issue) it would require you to dismantle the laptop, but this might not work as we don't have your computer, and some steps we offer may seem confusing.

I'd recommend, if the warranty hasn't expired, take it back to your manufacturer/shop you bought it from so they can repair it, or diagnose the problem.

Thanks, Dom.

As always, check the cables and reseat power and data just to be sure. If you've done that, however, and it's still not showing up in Windows, an easy way to test is to put a bootable CD or DVD into the drive, make sure it's listed as the first boot device in the BIOS, and see what happens. If the BIOS doesn't see it or doesn't boot from an otherwise known-good bootable disc, you can be pretty certain it's seen it's last and needs to be replaced.

Jortan, if you have restore points, I recommend that you restore your system to a time before you edited the registry. If you remember exaclty what you changed and what those values were, you can change them back. It is best not to mess with the registry unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you decide to edit the registry, back it up first.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think the CDROM has seen better days. Unable to boot when I put in a DVD.

It just stopped working so can only assume that something has gone amiss
