dvd drive missing

I have a win 7 system that periodically fails to recognize the IDE dvd drive, I have tried other drives with same result, When it does show up in device manager I get the message, device cannot start Code 10 and other times it does not show up at all. There was a time when it worked ok and nothing has changed since. Any ideas? Thanks Bob

How is the addressing jumper on the rear of the drive set? Generally Cable Select is used. If that does not work, set it for Master.
