DVD Drive Problem

I recently installed W7 for the first time, having been on XP for years. I had quite a few problems, mainly due to older hardware needing new drivers. I think most of my problems are now solved, except for the problem I'm having with my DVD Drive..

Whenever I put a DVD into the drive, explorer will hang for several minutes. It can successfully read a disk to some extent, as the correct icon will appear in My Computer. Generally this leads to the PC crashing and my being forced to restart.

There are no error messages related to the DVD drive in the Device Manager or anything like that. I just can't figure out whats wrong.

Many thanks for any input.

Visit the website of the drive manufacturer for a firmware update.

If it's an older drive, the lens could be dirty or plain out failing. If you think it may be dirty and after doing firmware update, open the drive up and gently clean the lens with a q-tip and little rubbing alcohol. Dry it with q-tip after.

I tried updating the firmware, this hasn't made a difference. I'm sure the drive can't need cleaning, as it was fine up until I installed W7.

I'll post DxDiag if it can help at all:

There are loads of people with drive issues for DVD's.

The latest firmware will do no harm, but if it doesn't resolve it and if the device is an IDE type optical drive then I suggest you check that you are using an ultra DMA 80x cable, and the drive is set as master and there are no slaves sharing the ribbon.

No dice? Buy another one. Odds are W7 SP1 might provide some fixes, however it's a considerable way off at the moment.

There are a couple of angles I know of that can effect this other than those mentioned and fixes -
Storage Controllers & Chipset Drivers which you can find at your motherboards site (support - downloads - type in you motherboards name or select from a list) or this site in the download section - nVIDIA Geforce 285 260 9800 275 295 GT GTX AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870 5850 5770 4890 X2 - Guru of 3D: PC Hardware Reviews

1 Fix that keeps popping up for the registry but Im not sure about this - you can export the folder by right clicking it and select export - save to your desktop - and to replace it if the fix doesnt work by just clicking on the file you saved to the desktop.

I read this in a post elsewhere too, but when I examined the registry I found that there were no strings for upper & lower filters on my own machine at the registry location cited; I also noted there were a significant number of posts regards BETA versions of W7 which were associated with this solution.

Hearing what Microsoft (eventually) have to say will be interesting at some point.

Can you try a new burner - if you have a 111 then buy a new 218?

Thanks for all the input guys, I'll try these all out in the morning.

One theory I wanted to suggest (I bloody hope this isn't the case).. I have two HDDs in my PC, both 250GB. Back on XP I only used the primary HDD, as I found the other would give up when trying to install anything from disk. I never got round to fixing this and the second HDD ended up just not being used. Now I've formatted and installed W7. I could've sworn I'd installed it on to the old primary HDD, but could it be that I've installed the OS on the secondary drive? Thus causing these problems? Maybe this is all not the case, just wanted to confirm.

I've also noticed a sound like the Hard Drive spinning down quite loudly every so often, which never happened before W7.

That could be due to hard disk power options. Try and find out what the advanced power management options are.

It can't. He said it shows the icon from the DVD. Can't do that without power to the drive going well to being with.

My mistake - although I've never had DVD drive issues. The BIOS could also be checked.

Now that may be a good suggestion. :D A motherboard bios update if one is available.

IF you made a mistake when installing W7 and selected the old drive to install W7 on in Custom Install it would be installed there but all your XP files still should still be on the other drive I think, so just check whats on it - the MBR would be on the XP disc unless you changed the disk boot order in the bios prior to installing.
