Dvd drive seemed dead

I have 2 dvd drives.

I hadn't used the second one in a while.

Yesterday, I inserted a disc and it wouldn't read it. (also a grinding noise).
I clicked properties and it froze.

I had to take out the disc to stop that.

I was going to replace the drive and had left the slot open.

A few hours later, I had forgotten about the problem and inserted a disc ( same one as before) and now it is fine.

Any ideas as to what caused this strange behavior?

Dust or dirt on the lens or disk could have caused a seek error. That could account for the grinding noise. It may also be that the disk didn't seat itself properly when you put it in. That happens with my drive once in a while.

Well... I think it is dead for real.

I just inserted a disc and have the original problem.

I inserted a lens cleaning disc and it won't recognize it and the grinding is back.

Any other ideas?

DVD drives are cheap, $20, replace it.

You could remove it from the case, remove the cover and clean & lube it. Clean the lens with some alcohol and a q-tip, blow out any dust with canned air. May not make any difference.

You could also have two disks in the player at the same time.
