Hi Hanish.

Did you check with the BIOS if the DVD ROM drive is still listed? If not listed there are two things probably had just happened. First the internal connector is loosing (need to go to hardware tech), second the drive had just died already. In the second case you need to install a new one or buy an ext DVD ROM Drive (if you badly need it).

To enter BIOS you need to hit a key indicated on the screen during POST (Power On Self Test). Form most desktop is Del key, but for your Laptop it is possibly F10. Then navigate through the BIOS menu on listed drives. Mostly you normally you will see one HDD and one optical drive (DVD ROM drive) mentioned by type and brand.

You did remove and reinserted it? Well, when you reinserted the drive, you have to make sure that all connection are intact?
If the DVD drive working LED has never lit anymore I'm afraid it has just bricked. You might have to buy a new one. ;)
I don't know if it can be repaired by yourself as we don't really know which part got malfunctioned. It could be the sensor, board, laser head, or else.
I think you would need to consult HP tech support on your local area.
