DVD Maker activation error

Hi, I got my Windows 7 Home premium about 18 months ago and have never had a need to use DVD maker. So when someone told me I could use it to make menu's on my home movies I wanted to try it.
So I got to "Programs and Features" to activate DVD maker but it won't work. It gives an error "Unable to install some features"

Can I download it ? On the Microsoft website I see only a developers kit for Vista.

Appreciate your help.
Thank you
Pete

Try running sfc /scannow from an Elevated Command Prompt, then try to turn on Windows DVD Maker again.

If that still doesn't work, give CDBurnerXP a try. Works with XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8.

Thanks Ztruker, unfortunately it did not work. It said something to the effect some files could not be updated, look in the CBS.log for details.
Looked for this file afterwards but could not find it.

I have used CDBurnerXP for years. But as far as I know it does not let you add menu's to your movie dvd's.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sorry, missed the part about menus. I use Roxio for that.
The log is in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.

Post the log here as an attachment so I can look at it.

OK, found the folder but it only has CAB files in it. When I look at it with WinRar it has a huge text file in it. 4500 pages of text.

Related question: Can I re-install dvd maker from the 3 system restore disks or the system repair disk which I created when I first got the computer?
And if possible, how do I go about doing that without messing up all the updates I have done since then?

That looks like a very invasive operation. :-)

Someone suggested to look in the DVD Maker folder en see what files are there. Well I did and all it shows is 3 DLL files Pipeline, Pipetran and WMM2clip) and two sub-folders (en-US and Shared). Both sub-folders are empty.

So to me it looks like a lot of missing files.

The DVD Maker directory should have 375 Files in 23 Folders.

I zipped up C:\Program Files\DVD Maker and uploaded it to my Dropbox account. You can download it from here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/110470324/DVD Maker.zip

I'll delete it when you're done.

Unzip and put all the files in C:\Program Files\DVD Maker, then try running dvdmaker.exe and see if it works.

Hey thanks a million. It is working. It doesn't show in programs on control panel and it does not work when I put the checkmark in programs and features , but it will work running the dvdmaker.exe program directly.
Will try it out this weekend and see if it will burn also.

Thanks again. Nice to finally play with it and learn to use it.
Much appreciated.

You can right click on dvdmaker.exe, click Send to then pick Desktop and it will place an icon on the desktop for you.

Thanks, yes I know how to put a shortcut on the desktop. With my message I just wanted to let you know that it is not quite a proper install. But so far so good it works. Thanks again.

Well tried it, but no luck. Preview works, but trying to burn gives an error. "Cannot create the DVD. An error occurred when burning the DVD."
It shows the right drive letter in the DVDMaker setup but I guess it is missing the connection to a driver because it wasn't installed in the W7 system.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. You never did post the cbs.log file. Maybe something in there will help.

Sorry, I didn't check this forum lately and didn't know you replied.

We couldn't find the cbs.log in the log folder. However we did find a cbspersist*******.log file in the temp directory.
We looked at it but all it showed about dvd maker was the following error:
2012-12-07 00:15:44, Error CSI 00000013@2012/12/7:07:15:44.709 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\primitiveinstallers\filehierarchy.cpp(1279): Store corruption detected in function FileInstaller::CFileInstallerHierarchy::CommitFileChanges expression: 0

This probably has to do with the fact that I copied all the files into the directory instead of installing the program.
