Hi there

I'm looking for a conventional DVD player that can play MKV / MP4 videos from an external USB device. Quality should be 1080p so I suppose a Blu Ray player would suffice.

When reading the specs a lot say they have a USB port but I can never find what exactly the USB port will play -- I don't want it just for looking at photos (jpegs). I also don't want just an XVID / DIVX standard - I would like true 1080p via HDMI from the USB device. (I would love just to plug in an external USB HDD and play the movies).

Any suggestions here --- I don't need an INTERNAL HDD on the device so that should make it cheaper too. I'm not bothered about region either and PAL/NTSC is also an irrelevance for modern TV's too. The only thing if I buy a USA model is that I'd need it to work on European 220V AC.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi,
Most that have a usb would be used to access the contents of the device especially if on the front,
Not sure any would have plug and play but doesn't sound outlandish to expect it,
Pretty much like a usb ipod connection on a receiver ;)

Just confirmed that my Oppo BDP-103 plays both MP4 and MKV 1080p videos stored on USB flash drive plugged into the front USB socket of the player.

From Oppo main menu, just navigate over to "Video" and push OK, and it then presents BD (i.e. drive tray for discs) as well as the inserted USB drive. Push OK on the USB drive, and it shows the folder structure on the drive. Navigate to the file or folder/file you want and push OK. It begins to play.

Additional disc and file formats, such as DVD, audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, AVCHD, MP4, AVI, MKV and other audio/video/picture files on recorded discs or USB drives can be played back on the BDP-103. The BDP-103 fully supports high-resolution lossless WAV and FLAC audio formats.

Roku Ready™ - Full Roku streaming experience with an optional Roku Streaming Stick plugged in to the MHL Input; Up to 1080p HD; 750+ entertainment channels; Dual-band, extended-range wireless; Compatible with Roku Game Remote.

If you have a smart TV (eg, Samsung) you can just connect the USB storage device direct to the TV.
- our 1TB self powered USB pocket drive holds 90 movies (disc is 76% occupied)
- the TV remote does everything we want it to do.
- select movie, play, <<, >>, pause etc
- we are using MP4 file format, which is OK upto about 27inch, but I imagine a 60inch screen would be crap (untested)

My wife will watch wallpaper peel -- but I like quality video and audio.
- the compromise is ... I lose ;)
