Dell laptop E5500 running windows 7 x64.

DVD ROM appears in device manager after start up for a few seconds then disappears. Showing Error Code 45 (not connected to computer)

Earlier this evening it also showed error code 10 (device cannot start)

Opening and closing the tray prompts it to show in device manager but again for only a few seconds.

Loading a data CD will get it to run and it works for as long as it is being used then disappears from device manager again.

Update
This not a upper/lower filters issue and BIOS is set to AHCI not IDE

Is there a setting that is incorrectly configured?

Alright mate,

Click Start, Computer. At the top left you should see "Organise". Go in there and click "Folder and search options" Select "View" from the three tabs at the top. Look for the tick box that says "Hide empty drive in the Computer folder" and untick it. Press "Apply" and "Close/OK" and should be fine.

JHI

Thanks for that. Should have said that I had already checked that too. It's something else. I may be wrong but I wouldn't have thought that changing that windows setting would prompt a hardware error code in device manager...?

It's just very odd that the drive appears to work and appears in device manager when in use but then disappears from device manager and system tray seconds after usage ends. Slightly different, I think, to all the other scenarios I read about on the web.

make sure the drive is fimly seated in its slot , flip the lappy over, undo the retaining screw push the drive out of its socket and reinsert and re-tighten screw, over a period of time they have a habit of slightly comming adrift this may be what is happening in your case

+1 from me... Cleaning the connection (if possible) and re-inserting it worked in a few cases that I've come across, sometimes you need to re-insert it a couple of times.

I found others by Googling with very similar problems. This dell machine was eventually returned to Dell for full refund for his reason plus display issues when upgrading to full 4GB of RAM.
