I have interesting problem that i have not seen before. I have Dell Precision M4500 and i set it up with dual boot. First partition is windows 7 and the second it Ubuntu. The problem is with windows partition and inability to find/recognize the DVD rom. When i open device manager there are no missing drivers or unknown devices. In the Disk Management panel i don't see DVD rom at all (i do see virtual dvd drive).
I checked een viewer and found following error:

Event ID 7
The device,\Device\Cdrom1, has a bad block.

I had no problems with the drive itself when installing windows 7 or ubuntu, but after installing ubuntu my windows side does not recognize DVD anymore. When i put DVD in, my drive spins initially and it still works with Ubuntu, so it is not hardware error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

It sounds like the Data cable to the disk drive is going bad, or it is the drive its self, They can die at any given point with out warning

Hmmm...

I don't know if this is still one of the funky problems with Windows (XP had this problem, but mostly due to running for a while, where sometimes, the OS just 'loses' the CD/DVD drives)

How long have you had Windows running? Have you recently restarted or is this Ubuntu VMing it?
